Meet our new Pastor, Rev. Dr. Tony Tomasino tony tomasino

Pastor Tony Tomasino has been serving in churches since 1995, and has been an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church since 2000. Born in Flint, MI, in 1961, he received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1983. Feeling a call to ministry, he went on to receive a Master of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1988. The draw of academic studies led him to the University of Chicago, where he completed a Ph.D. in Near Eastern Judaica in 1995, specializing in Dead Sea Scrolls and early Jewish apocalyptic texts.

After completing his Ph.D., Tony took his first pastorate, a small church on the north side of Chicago. His subsequent appointments took him to DeKalb, IL, Flint, MI, and Negaunee, MI (near Marquette). While serving in the U.P., he received an invitation to apply for a position as professor of Old Testament at Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN. Intrigued by the possibility of ministering with young people, he accepted the invitation, interviewed for the position, and exchanged the pastorate for the classroom in 2003.

The departure from preaching, however, proved temporary, as Tony was soon called upon to fill the pulpit at Grace United Methodist Church, Niles, MI, while continuing to teach at Bethel.

In addition to his preaching, teaching, and counseling work, Pastor Tony is a prolific author. His books include Written upon the Heart: The Ten Commandments for Today’s Christian; Judaism before Jesus: The Events and Ideas that Shaped the New Testament World; Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary: Esther; and The World of Jesus. (All are available through Amazon.com.) When not teaching, preaching, or writing, Tony often can be found playing piano, guitar, or trumpet; enjoying bluegrass, folk and gospel music, and occasionally subjects’ audiences to some of his own compositions. His wife, Cordelia, holds a Ph.D. in biology, and between the two of them, they do a fair job fielding the unending questions of their favorite students: their three children, Vincent, Bethany and Teresa.

We welcome Pastor Tony and his family to Caro and encourage you to join Pastor Tony in worship on Sunday July 3rd, at 9:30 AM!
